I suspect that, as usual, this is not about Israel, but that Israel is to be the sacrificial lamb for some other middle east 'initiative'.

Israel gained independance (UN resolution 181)at the behest of a world which estimated that the new Jewish state would last 3 weeks before being massacred, and the British ably assisted by ensuring that it was a disarmed Israel which had to face the Arab hordes in 1948.

Why should we expect world policy be anything different now, 60+ years later?

BRUCE - Israel will no more be able to defend herself against a Palestinian 'state' than she could against Hamas in Gaza, without the entire world howling in rage. Can't you just envisage the glaring headlines: 'ISRAEL SMASHES BRAND NEW PALESTINIAN STATE' and so on?

The flawed premise underlying the 'peace process' is that BOTH sides desire peace.

But that has never been the case, nor is it the case now. Hamas, as Sultan Knish notes, is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. Al Queda was also spawned by the Muslim Brotherhood. It's aim is a global Caliphate - the Israel/Palestinian conflict is not some localised problem, it is a *symptom* of the problem that is ISLAM.

A new Palestinian state would be just yet another Islamic theocracy - and we all know what happens in them.

As for Obama... I gave up all hope of his possessing any common sense or integrity when I read the transcript of his love letter to Islam, in Cairo.

In the event a "state" of some form springs into life, then that state is subject to the international conventions of warfare.

After the sufficient "suicide" bombers and Qassems have been launched by the crazies, the Israelis could, in full compliance with international convention, either wait for a suitable wind direction and lob a six-pack of nukes over the fence, or alternately, crank up the armoured brigades and drive to the sea, again.

Naturally, the foam-flecked hordes of nuance-mongers in the West would go berserk and the surrounding crazies would be screaming for revenge; nobody said it was all going to be fun for everyone.

I suspect that the cards to watch in this poker game are at the Iranian end of the table; there's nothing like a military adventure, even by proxy, to shore up a dictatorship.
